  1. Cartoons
    1. These seven cartoons were executed by Raphael and his studio for a series of tapestries commonly called the Acts of the Apostles. The cartoons were purchased by the future Charles I in 1623 and are on loan from Her Majesty The Queen to the Victoria & Albert Museum. The ten original tapestries, intended to be hung in the Sistine Chapel on feast days, are housed in the Vatican Museums. Three of Raphael’s preparatory studies for the cartoons are also in the Royal Collection.

        1. [3]The Blinding of Elymas. 1516 (made). first state, 1516.
The Blinding of Elymas; Elymas struck blind by St. Paul; from a design by Raphael for the tapestries in the Sistine Chapel; engraving by Agostino Veneziano (Agostino dei Musi); Italian School; 1516.
This print is dated 1516, the year in which Raphael received final payment for the commission to provide designs for tapestries for the Pope. Seven of the tapestries first went up in the Sistine Chapel in time for the 26th December 1519. Prints of the Cartoons' subjects were therefore in circulation before anyone in Rome had seen the tapestries. In the sixteenth century the two main markets for prints were art lovers and artists. By July 1517, the painter Andrea del Sarto had used this engraving as the inspiration for a fresco in Florence.

        4. The Death of Ananias by Ugo da Carpi (ca 1480-?1532); from a design by Raphael for the tapestries in the Sistine Chapel; chiaroscuro woodcut from four blocks; Italian, 1518.
        5. [4]The Death of Ananias. ca. 1518 (printed).
        6. (second state, 1518) Although Ugo da Carpi was a contemporary of Raphael's he was not in the same situation as Marcantonio Raimondi and Agostino Veneziano who worked directly with the artist. Early impressions of this print carry a warning that "anyone printing these images without the permission of the author will incur the excommunication of Pope Leo X". Ugo da Carpi's efforts to protect his artistic property seem rather ironical given that it is now thought that this chiaroscuro woodcut is a direct copy of Agostino Veneziano's engraving of the same subject.
